Welcome to the Benz Oil Analysis Laboratory

Lubricant technology is at the core of Benz’s contribution to manufacturing. Our state-of-the-art oil analysis lab and team of qualified experts allows us to consistently innovative and deliver custom formulated products to each of our customers. It’s the heart of who we are – it’s what makes us tick.

Our Oil Analysis Lab is Staffed and Equipped to Meet Countless Manufacturing Challenges, and Allows Us to:

  • Ensure the quality of our products
  • Confirm field samples for continued use
  • Resolve a customer problem
  • Identify the chemistry of an unknown fluid

As a catalyst in the synthetic oil and lubrication industry, Benz has invested millions of dollars to provide a modern lubricant laboratory. But, the Benz lab is so much more than instruments identifying trace elements, equipment measuring friction, probes recording quench rates, and computers storing and reporting results; it is the people – highly trained chemists and technicians – that provide the dependable precision, accuracy and meaning to information that would be simply numbers without the expertise required to analyze it all.

Everything in the Benz lab begins with Quality Control – meaning every product manufactured and shipped must pass our high quality standards before it leaves our doors.

After transfer to our packaging line, each product is sampled and tested again as a safeguard against possible contamination. Both the data and samples are retained to provide standard information that may be required following application. Benz Quality Control rigorously employs standard ASTM methodology when available.

Each procedure is statistically validated to document possible sources of error in instrumentation, operator, and procedure. All equipment is calibrated on an appropriate schedule against known standards. As an ISO 9000 certified laboratory, our commitment to quality is well-documented, and essential to our success.

Each year, our own oil analysis lab processes over twenty thousand field samples. Each sample received requires an average of five tests, and, these results are normally processed and emailed to our customers within two days of receipt.

With hundreds of products and thousands of applications, our Routine Service Analysis applies specific test sets to each product appropriately. Grinding oils, coolants, hydraulic fluids, quenchants, engine oils – each type of industrial product demands specific tests and result ranges. Our Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS) stores the customer information, test requirements, and results throughout the product life-cycle. As always, each procedure and instrument is validated and calibrated on schedule to known standards to ensure reliable accurate and precise results.

Industrial manufacturing is a complex combination of shifting variables. Even the most rigorously controlled plant can experience situations that may require the troubleshooting expertise of the Benz team. Our lab is equipped and ready to provide the analysis that helps solve problems, with analyses including:

  • Viscosity
  • Density
  • Elemental content
  • Water content
  • Infrared spectra
  • Particle analysis
  • Soot content
  • Flash point
  • Chromatography
  • Surface analysis (and more)

Each issue is documented and reported through our Laboratory Service Analysis System to provide storage for all information pertinent to a troubleshooting event. Our team of application experts, chemists, and technicians work the problem to root cause and customer satisfaction.

Research and Product Development hold the key to our future. The Benz development laboratory has created a network of field test sites to compare and validate real-life performance. Our ready access to horizontal & vertical CNC machines, CNC lathes, grinding operations, EDM, and a host of other industrial operations in industrial environments and operated by trained machinists allows Benz chemists to take the beaker into the field and distinguish between acceptable performance and exceptional performance.

Development chemists can then correlate lab simulation data with field performance data. Whether we are fine-tuning established technology or testing a matrix of new chemistry for advanced machining research, the marriage between lab and field is invaluable. This same network allows Benz to work with our customers to validate fluid performance without interrupting production. We work to match the metal, tooling, feeds, speeds, and geometry to provide machine data that relates directly to the customers’ experience.

As of July 1, 2016, Benz has transitioned to a new Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS). Your laboratory results are no longer hosted in our old portal, as they will be emailed to you directly. If you’d like to request your historical data results, please click the button below.
